hi This is my first time on this forum so please bear with me I wonder if any one can help me .I have always wanted a volvo estate saved up and bought a V70 D5 2003 model it has only done 38,000 miles since i have had it it has been hard to get into reverse in the mornings worse when realy cold but if you giggle about in the other gears first it will go in. The clutch does not judder the gears do not crunch clutch does not slip. My local dealer said it could be sticky splines could that be right any one out there had any similar probs?

Welcome to the forum. It is immensely helpful, and I have learned so much from the members. I have a 2003 S60 with the same problem; it is well covered on the forum, as it is a common fault. Type in S60 or V70 gearbox in the "search" part of the toolbar at the top, and you will find answers. It involves removing the gearbox and re-greasing the splines, but just changing the oil may help a little, as one member suggests.

Also, I should have suggested one good tip I found - you could leave it overnight in the gear you want to use when driving off ( first or reverse, I should think) , and then start the engine with the clutch pedal down. Did your dealer give you a quote for the gearbox removal? I gather it could approach 4 figures!

I had the same problem on a '01 V70: the dealer never really solved it, simply kept "oiling" at each service, which helped a little. When the replacement '04 V70 showed the same fault after three months, I insisted in having the gearbox removed and re-greased under warranty. Now, after 4 years and nearly 150000km, it's still ok. It's probably worth asking the dealer to do his "oiling" upon service, they should offer it for free since it's a well known problem. Another trick which worked for me was shifting into third gear before going into reverse, rather than directly from neutral into rev.
