Hi As you know most DAWs have vertical db scale on the y axis of waveform display. For example, izotope RX has: You can zoom-in/out in the scale and even draw a horizontal line to compare the amplitudes among multiple places in the audio clip: Simple editors like Audacity have db scale, as well. Yet, reaper has not. There are cumbersome roundabout ways of doing it in reaper though. (see at the end) I feel the visual guide very convenient when using vst plugins to set thresholds for example. Currently I use iZotope RX 6 as an external editor to see the db geographics of the overall audio clip. What are your roundabout ways to overcome the reaper's limitation?

I use the meters and my ears like I've always done.

The dBFS value is just a number. There are only 2 things you need to know about that number: 1) Is it below zero while tracking? (the clip indicator will show you that) 2) Is it above -inf (is there any audio going in / coming out ? (the meter will show you that) Watching the dB level of a signal is a lot like watching your speedometer all the time on the freeway - - it works ok until you don't notice you're not on the road any more. What you hear is what matters. What you see will be long gone when people listen to your product....

In ReaComp (and a number of other compressors) I just set a ratio and lower the threshold until I see the gain reduction meter shows some gain reduction. For those compressors that don't show this, I turn off nakeup gain, then compare the input and output level meters. As more compression occurs the output meter level goes down. Once I have the desired amount of compression, I add makep gain so the peak output level is about the same as peak input level. I hope you find this helpful.
