Hello, does anyone know if the cam belt snaps do the valves and pistons hit? The engine is a 1991 16valve 2300cc unit. If they do catch has anyone got a spare head or engine thats cheap or where can I get the parts apart from a dealer. many thanks vnman123

Some have escaped damage if it as happened at low speed , when at idle for the most part. Mister T.

IMHO if you are going to rebuild one of these lovely engines, do it right with Volvo parts (and maybe some forged internals for the day you can get it +Td)

I know of the whereabouts of several complete 16v heads. I'm sure one could be made available at a price! These engines do have a bit of a reputation (mostly for being outstanding, but a bit complex and fiddly compared to the 8v versions)...but I've not heard a horror story like that before! cheers James

in the early 90s there were lots with trouble , and it was cambelts , which im sure was to do with the oil pump drive bolt . I also have a recollection of hydraulic lifters being a problem , that was new technology on a 16v head that hadnt been in production before . we had a couple in at my uncles garage , but they were too complex really - altho very nice .
